MSME/SSI Registration: complete guide
Introduction
Micro, small and medium enterprises are the backbone of the Indian economy. They make up the vast majority of businesses in the country, employ a large share of the workforce and contribute significantly to manufacturing output and exports. To support them, the government offers a range of benefits, from easier access to bank credit to protection against delayed payments from buyers. To claim most of these benefits, a business must be registered as an MSME.
Earlier, small businesses registered as Small Scale Industries, commonly called SSI registration, and later through a system called Udyog Aadhaar. Since July 2020, both have been replaced by Udyam Registration, which is now the only official MSME registration in India. It is done online, is based on Aadhaar, and is linked with the income tax and GST databases. Once registered, the business receives a Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate, which is valid for life as long as the business continues and its details are kept updated.
The registration is a self-declaration, but the details you declare matter. Your classification as micro, small or medium depends on your investment in plant, machinery or equipment and your turnover, and the government system picks up information from your tax filings to verify it. Wrong details can lead to the wrong classification or problems when you try to claim benefits later. Our team files your Udyam registration correctly, chooses the right activity codes, and explains how to use the registration to your advantage.
This page explains who should register, the benefits, the classification rules, the process, documents, timelines, our fee and what to do after registration.
Who Needs It
Udyam registration is voluntary, but it is strongly recommended for any eligible business that wants to access MSME benefits. It is useful for:
- Manufacturers of any size within the medium enterprise limits, from small workshops to factories.
- Service providers such as IT firms, consultants, agencies, repair services, transport operators and educational service providers.
- Traders, including wholesale and retail traders, who are allowed to register for the purpose of priority sector lending.
- Startups that want easier access to credit and government tenders.
- Businesses supplying to large companies that want protection against delayed payments.
- Businesses applying for government tenders, since many tenders give preferences or exemptions to registered micro and small enterprises.
- Exporters who want to access schemes meant for MSME exporters.
Any type of entity can register, including a sole proprietorship, partnership firm, LLP, private or public limited company, One Person Company, Hindu Undivided Family, cooperative society, trust or society, as long as it carries on a business activity and meets the classification limits.
Key Benefits
Registration as an MSME opens up a range of advantages. The most important are:
- Protection against delayed payments. Under the MSME Development Act, buyers must pay registered micro and small enterprises within the agreed time, which cannot exceed 45 days from acceptance of goods or services. If payment is delayed, the buyer is liable to pay compound interest at three times the bank rate notified by the Reserve Bank. Micro and small enterprises can also approach the MSME Facilitation Council in their state to recover delayed payments.
- Tax-linked payment discipline. Under income tax law, a buyer can claim a deduction for amounts payable to a registered micro or small enterprise only if the payment is made within the time limit under the MSME law. This gives buyers a strong reason to pay on time.
- Priority sector lending. Banks are required to lend a portion of their credit to the MSME sector, making it easier for registered businesses to get loans.
- Collateral-free credit. Micro and small enterprises can access loans without collateral under a government-backed credit cover scheme for small businesses, subject to the lender's assessment and scheme limits.
- Interest subsidies and concessions. Certain schemes offer interest subvention or lower interest rates for eligible MSMEs.
- Government tenders. Public procurement rules require central government departments and public sector undertakings to buy a share of their annual purchases from micro and small enterprises. Registered units may also be exempted from paying earnest money deposits and tender fees in many tenders.
- Subsidies and schemes. Registered MSMEs can apply for schemes related to technology upgradation, quality certification, patent and trademark filing, marketing support and participation in trade fairs, as notified by the central and state governments.
- State-level incentives. Many states offer additional benefits such as concessions on electricity, stamp duty, land allotment and capital subsidies for registered units, subject to their industrial policies.
- Credibility. A Udyam certificate shows customers and lenders that your business is recognised as an MSME.
Why the payment protection matters so much. For most small businesses, the biggest day-to-day problem is not finding customers but getting paid on time. When a large buyer holds back payments for 90 or 120 days, a small supplier has to borrow to pay wages, rent and raw material costs, which eats into profit and can push a healthy business into a cash crisis. The MSME law changes this balance. Once you are registered as a micro or small enterprise, buyers who delay payments beyond the legal limit face interest at a high rate, and they also lose the income tax deduction for the unpaid amount until it is actually paid. In practice, this has made many larger companies review their payment cycles to registered suppliers. To get this protection, your registration must be in place, your buyer should know about it, and your invoices and contracts should mention your Udyam number.
Benefits depend on the scheme. Not every benefit is available to every MSME. Some schemes are only for manufacturers, some only for micro enterprises, and some only for units in certain states or sectors. Each scheme has its own application process. Udyam registration is the entry ticket to all of them, and we can guide you on the schemes that fit your business.
Eligibility and Legal Requirements
Classification. An enterprise is classified based on two criteria applied together: investment in plant, machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. Under the revised limits currently notified:
- Micro enterprise: investment up to 2.5 crore rupees and turnover up to 10 crore rupees.
- Small enterprise: investment up to 25 crore rupees and turnover up to 100 crore rupees.
- Medium enterprise: investment up to 125 crore rupees and turnover up to 500 crore rupees.
If a business crosses either limit for its category, it moves to the next category. Exports are excluded when calculating turnover for classification. These limits are revised from time to time, so we confirm the current limits at the time of filing.
Other requirements:
- Aadhaar. The registration is filed using the Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner, Karta or authorised signatory, with OTP verification on the linked mobile number.
- PAN. PAN of the enterprise is mandatory for most entities. Investment and turnover figures are linked to PAN-based tax filings.
- GSTIN where applicable. If the enterprise is required to be registered under GST, its GSTIN must be provided.
- One registration per enterprise. An enterprise can have only one Udyam registration. Multiple activities, units and locations are added within the same registration.
- Accurate activity codes. The business activity must be described using the National Industrial Classification codes.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Consultation. We understand your business, its legal structure, activities, investment and turnover, so we can determine the right classification and codes.
- Choosing activity codes. We identify the correct National Industrial Classification codes for your manufacturing or service activities. Choosing the right codes matters for scheme eligibility.
- Aadhaar verification. The application is started on the Udyam registration portal using the Aadhaar of the proprietor, partner, director or authorised signatory, verified through OTP.
- PAN validation. The PAN of the enterprise is entered and validated. Investment and turnover data is fetched from tax records where available.
- Entering enterprise details. We fill in the enterprise name, type of organisation, plant or unit locations, office address, date of incorporation or commencement, bank account details, employee count and activity details.
- Investment and turnover. We enter the investment and turnover figures in line with your records and tax filings.
- Declarations. The applicant confirms the declarations, and the form is submitted with a final OTP.
- Udyam Registration Number. On submission, a Udyam Registration Number is generated.
- E-certificate. The Udyam registration certificate is issued electronically and sent to the registered email address. We share it with you along with a summary of your registration.
- Benefits briefing. We explain how to use the registration with your buyers, lenders and in tenders.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Paying for "registration" on unofficial channels. Udyam registration is filed only on the official government portal. Be careful about channels that imitate the official process.
- Choosing the wrong activity code. Wrong codes can make you ineligible for certain schemes or tenders.
- Declaring figures that do not match tax records. Investment and turnover figures are cross-checked with income tax and GST data. Mismatches can lead to reclassification.
- Registering more than once. Each enterprise is allowed only one Udyam registration. Additional units and activities must be added to the existing registration.
- Not updating the registration. Changes in address, activity, ownership or financial figures must be updated. Classification is reviewed periodically based on tax data.
- Not informing buyers. The protection against delayed payments is most effective when buyers know you are a registered micro or small enterprise. Mention your Udyam number on invoices and contracts.
- Using old Udyog Aadhaar certificates. Older registrations are no longer valid. Businesses must hold a Udyam registration.
What Happens After
- Display your Udyam number on invoices, quotations, letterheads and purchase orders so buyers know you are an MSME.
- Share your certificate with buyers and include payment terms within the legal limit in your contracts.
- Use it with lenders. Mention your MSME status when applying for loans, overdrafts or working capital facilities.
- Apply for tenders that offer preferences or exemptions for micro and small enterprises.
- Explore schemes run by the central and state governments for MSMEs.
- Keep records updated. File income tax and GST returns on time, since classification is linked to these filings.
- Update your registration whenever there is a change in business details, units or activities.
- Act on delayed payments. If a buyer does not pay within the legal limit, you can send a notice and approach the MSME Facilitation Council. Our team can help with this.
FAQs
Is Udyam registration the same as SSI registration?
Udyam registration is the current form of MSME registration and has replaced both SSI registration and Udyog Aadhaar. People still use the terms SSI or MSME registration, but the official registration today is Udyam.
Is MSME registration mandatory?
No, it is voluntary. However, many benefits, such as protection against delayed payments and preferences in government tenders, are available only to registered enterprises.
Does Udyam registration need to be renewed?
No. The registration is valid for life, as long as the business continues and the details are kept updated. There is no renewal requirement.
Can traders register as MSMEs?
Yes. Retail and wholesale traders are allowed to register on the Udyam portal for the purpose of priority sector lending. Some other benefits may be limited to manufacturing and service enterprises.
What happens if my business grows beyond the micro limit?
Your classification will change to small or medium based on your updated investment and turnover. The change is usually reflected based on tax data, and certain benefits may change with the new classification.
Can a business without GST registration apply?
Yes. If your business is not required to register under GST, you can still obtain Udyam registration. However, if GST registration is mandatory for you, the GSTIN must be provided.
Can I add multiple business locations?
Yes. All plants, units and offices of the enterprise are added within the same Udyam registration. You do not need separate registrations for each location.
How does MSME registration help in recovering delayed payments?
Registered micro and small enterprises can claim compound interest on delayed payments and file a reference with the MSME Facilitation Council in their state, which can conciliate or arbitrate the dispute. Buyers also face tax consequences for delayed payments to registered micro and small enterprises.
Do I need to upload any documents?
No documents are uploaded during Udyam registration. It is based on Aadhaar, PAN and self-declared information, which is verified against government databases. Keep supporting records ready in case of verification.
