Property & Personal: complete guide

Introduction

Some of the most important legal work in a person's life has nothing to do with running a business. Buying a flat, getting married, changing your name after marriage or for personal reasons, recording a change of gender or religion, filing a complaint against a seller who refused a refund, reporting a crime online, or helping a family member move abroad are all moments when the law suddenly matters. Each of these involves a particular law, a particular authority and a particular set of documents, and a small mistake can cost weeks of delay or leave you without the protection the law offers.

The Property & Personal category brings together our services for individuals and families. It covers property transactions, such as registration of sale deeds and title verification before purchase; personal status matters, such as court marriage, marriage registration, name change, gender change and religion change; consumer disputes, including general consumer complaints, complaints against online sellers and marketplaces, and insurance claim disputes; police complaints filed online; and immigration support for students, families and businesses sending employees overseas.

What these services have in common is that the person needing help is usually doing this for the first time. Few people know which office registers a marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, how to publish a name change in the Official Gazette, which consumer commission has jurisdiction over a complaint, or what a title search should cover before a property is bought. Mistakes at these stages are hard to undo. A sale deed with the wrong property description, a marriage notice filed with the wrong registrar, a consumer complaint filed after the limitation period or before notice to the seller, or a gazette notification with a spelling error can all create problems that take far longer to fix than to prevent.

Our team of advocates, chartered accountants and documentation specialists handles these matters with care for both the legal detail and the personal side. We explain the process in plain language, prepare the documents, coordinate with the relevant authority and keep you informed at each step. This page gives an overview of every service in the category, who they are for, how to choose the right one, how we work and how pricing works. Laws and procedures in these areas vary by state and change from time to time, and we check the current position at the time of filing.

Services in This Category

College Immigration. For students planning to study abroad, this service supports the documentation side of the move: reviewing admission letters, preparing and checking documents for student visa applications, guidance on financial documents, attestation and apostille of educational certificates, and pre-departure paperwork. We do not make admission or visa decisions, which rest with institutions and foreign authorities, but we help make sure the documents you submit are complete and consistent.

Consumer Protection Act. This service covers complaints under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 against sellers and service providers for defective goods, deficient services, unfair trade practices and misleading advertisements. We draft the legal notice, prepare the complaint, help you file it before the District, State or National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission depending on the value involved, and guide you through the process.

Corporate Immigration. For companies sending employees abroad, or bringing foreign employees to India, this service supports the legal and documentation side, such as employment letters, document attestation and apostille, compliance with Indian requirements for foreign nationals such as registration with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, and coordination with the company's HR team. The scope is tailored to each business.

Court Marriage. A court marriage is a civil marriage solemnised and registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 before a Marriage Officer, open to couples of any religion. This service covers the notice of intended marriage, documents, the notice period, objections if any, and solemnisation in the presence of witnesses, leading to the marriage certificate.

E-Commerce Consumer Complaint. This service is for buyers who have a dispute with an online seller or marketplace, such as non-delivery, wrong or defective products, refund delays or hidden charges. We draft a notice and complaint using the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 and the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and help with grievance escalation and, where needed, filing before the Consumer Commission.

Family Immigration. This service supports families with the documentation needed for dependent or family visas, such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, relationship proofs, affidavits, attestation and apostille. It is quoted after understanding the destination country and the family's situation.

Gender Change. Under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, a transgender person can apply for a certificate of identity and later for a revised certificate after surgery, through the National Portal for Transgender Persons. This service covers the application, affidavit, gazette notification and updating of documents such as PAN, Aadhaar and passport.

Insurance Consumer Complaint. For policyholders whose health, life, motor or other insurance claims have been rejected, delayed or underpaid, this service covers a review of the policy and rejection letter, a representation to the insurer's grievance cell, a complaint to the Insurance Ombudsman where applicable, and a consumer complaint where needed.

Marriage Registration. Couples who have already married under personal law, such as the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, can register their marriage with the Registrar of Marriages in their state. This service covers the application, documents, witnesses and appointment, leading to the marriage certificate, which is needed for passports, visas, bank and insurance records.

Name Change. This service covers a legal change of name for adults and minors, through an affidavit, a newspaper advertisement and publication in the Official Gazette, followed by updating identity documents. It applies to name changes after marriage or divorce, for spelling corrections, or for personal reasons.

Online Consumer Complaint. This service is for consumers who want to file a complaint online through the government's electronic filing system for consumer commissions or the national consumer helpline. We draft the complaint, help prepare evidence and guide you through e-filing and hearings.

Online Police Complaint. Many states allow complaints to be filed online through their police portals, and cyber crimes can be reported on the national cyber crime reporting portal. This service helps you draft a clear complaint, attach evidence and follow up, and explains when a First Information Report must be registered.

Property Registration. This service covers registration of sale deeds, gift deeds, lease deeds and other property documents with the Sub-Registrar under the Registration Act, 1908. We draft or review the document, calculate stamp duty, book the appointment and assist during execution.

Property Title Verification. Before buying property, a title search checks the chain of ownership, encumbrances, approvals and pending litigation. This service covers a review of title documents, searches at the Sub-Registrar's office, revenue records and other sources, and a written title report.

Religion Change. A person who has changed their religion may want to record it legally. This service covers the affidavit, newspaper advertisement and gazette notification, and guidance on any state law that requires prior notice or declaration to the district authority.

How to Choose the Right Service

Choosing the right service depends on what you want to achieve and where you are in the process.

  • Buying property? Start with Property Title Verification before you pay any significant advance. Once the title is clear and the deal is finalised, use Property Registration for the sale deed.
  • Getting married? If you have not yet married and want a civil marriage, choose Court Marriage. If you have already married in a religious ceremony and need a certificate, choose Marriage Registration.
  • Changing your identity details? Choose Name Change for names, Gender Change for recording gender identity under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, and Religion Change for recording a change of religion.
  • Unhappy with a product or service? Choose E-Commerce Consumer Complaint for disputes with online sellers or marketplaces, Insurance Consumer Complaint for claim rejections and policy disputes, Online Consumer Complaint if you want to e-file a complaint, and Consumer Protection Act for other disputes with sellers and service providers.
  • Need to report a crime? Choose Online Police Complaint. In emergencies, contact the police directly.
  • Moving abroad? Choose College Immigration for students, Family Immigration for spouses, children and parents, and Corporate Immigration for employers.

If you are unsure, book a consultation. Our team will listen to your situation and suggest the right service, or a combination of services, before any work begins.

How We Work

  1. Understanding your situation. We start with a conversation about what has happened or what you want to do, and the documents you already have.
  2. Explaining the process. We tell you which law applies, which authority is involved, the steps, the documents and the realistic timeline, including factors outside our control.
  3. Document checklist. We share a checklist specific to your case, and review each document for name mismatches, missing details and validity.
  4. Drafting. Our team drafts the documents needed, such as affidavits, notices, complaints, deeds or applications, in the format required.
  5. Your review. You review the drafts, and we make changes until they are accurate.
  6. Filing and appointments. We file the application or complaint, or book appointments with the Sub-Registrar, Marriage Officer or other authority, and tell you what to bring.
  7. Follow-up. We track the matter, respond to objections or queries, and keep you updated.
  8. Completion and next steps. We share the final certificate, registered document or order, and explain what to do next, such as updating records or filing an appeal.

Personal matters can be sensitive. We handle your information confidentially and share it only with the authorities involved in your matter.

Pricing

Each service in this category has its own pricing, shown on that service's page. For most services, such as registrations, name and status changes and consumer complaints, we charge a fixed professional fee that covers a defined scope of work, which is listed on the service page. For services where the work varies a great deal from case to case, such as the immigration services, we give a custom quote after understanding your requirements.

Government fees, stamp duty, registration charges, court or commission fees, newspaper advertisement costs and gazette charges are not part of our professional fee. They are payable at actual, and we tell you in advance which apply to your matter. Work outside the listed scope, such as appearances at hearings, appeals, travel or additional documents, is quoted separately before it begins, so there are no surprises.

FAQs

Can I use more than one service in this category together?

Yes. Many matters need more than one service, such as title verification followed by property registration, or marriage registration followed by a name change. We plan the work together so documents are consistent.

Do I need to visit any office in person?

It depends on the service and the state. Property registration, court marriage and marriage registration generally require you to appear before the authority. Name change, consumer complaints and online police complaints can usually be handled largely online.

Can NRIs use these services from abroad?

Yes, for most services. NRIs can often act through a power of attorney for property matters, and some processes can be handled with documents attested abroad. Some matters, such as court marriage, require personal presence.

Do you appear before consumer commissions or courts?

Our consumer services include drafting and filing. Representation at hearings can be arranged and is quoted separately, depending on the forum and the number of hearings.

Are government fees included in your fee?

No. Government fees, stamp duty and similar charges are payable at actual and are shown separately.

How long do these services take?

Timelines vary widely. A name change or marriage registration may take a few weeks, while a court marriage involves a statutory notice period, and consumer complaints depend on the commission's schedule. Each service page gives a typical timeline.

Is my information kept confidential?

Yes. We use your information only for your matter and share it only with the authorities and parties involved, as needed.

Can you promise a particular outcome?

No. Outcomes depend on the authorities, the facts and the law. We make sure your documents and filings are accurate and complete, and keep you informed throughout.

What if my case does not fit any of these services?

Book a consultation with our team. We can advise on related legal matters or suggest a lawyer consultation for your situation.

Are the laws the same in every state?

No. Property registration, stamp duty, marriage registration and some religion change requirements vary by state. We check the rules in your state at the time of filing.
