IEC [Import/Export Code]: complete guide
Introduction
The Importer Exporter Code, commonly called IEC, is a 10-digit identification number that is required for importing goods into India or exporting goods from India. It is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, which functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Without an IEC, customs authorities will not clear your import shipments, banks will not process foreign exchange remittances for imports or receipts for exports in the normal way, and you cannot claim export benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.
The IEC is linked to the PAN of the business. Each PAN can have only one IEC, and the IEC number is generally the same as the PAN for new applicants. It is issued online, there is no requirement to file periodic returns against it, and it does not expire. However, IEC holders must update their IEC details online every year during the update window, even if nothing has changed, otherwise the IEC can be deactivated.
Although the online application is short, getting the details right matters. The name, address and bank details in the IEC must match your PAN, GST and bank records, since customs, banks and export promotion bodies will check them. Our team prepares and files your IEC application, links the right bank account, and makes sure your IEC is ready to use for your first shipment.
This page explains who needs an IEC, the benefits, legal requirements, process, documents, timelines, our fee and how to keep your IEC active.
Who Needs It
An IEC is needed by any person or entity that:
- Imports goods into India for business purposes, including raw materials, machinery, finished products or components.
- Exports goods from India, whether directly or through an agent.
- Sells internationally through online channels, such as exporting products to overseas customers through e-commerce or courier.
- Exports services and wants to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy, or where the bank requires it for receiving export proceeds.
- Clears shipments through customs, since the customs broker needs the IEC to file the bill of entry or shipping bill.
- Applies for export promotion schemes, registration with export promotion councils, or other benefits under trade policy.
It is useful for all types of businesses, including sole proprietors, partnership firms, LLPs, companies, trusts, societies and Hindu Undivided Families.
Exemptions. Certain categories do not need an IEC, such as individuals importing or exporting goods for personal use not connected with business, certain government departments and ministries, and some notified charitable organisations. Specific exemptions are listed in the trade policy, and there are special rules for low-value courier shipments. If you are unsure whether you need an IEC, we can check this for you.
Key Benefits
- Access to global markets. An IEC allows you to buy from overseas suppliers and sell to international customers.
- Customs clearance. Shipments cannot be cleared through customs without an IEC, except in exempt cases.
- Banking for foreign trade. Banks use the IEC for processing import payments and export receipts in line with foreign exchange rules.
- Export incentives. Exporters need an IEC to claim duty remission, drawback and other export incentives under the trade policy.
- Lifetime validity. The IEC does not need renewal, provided it is updated annually.
- No ongoing return filings. There is no periodic return to be filed for the IEC itself.
- Credibility with overseas partners. Foreign buyers and suppliers often ask for your IEC as part of their due diligence.
- Registration with export promotion councils. An IEC is needed to obtain a registration-cum-membership certificate from export promotion councils, which is required for certain benefits.
How the IEC fits into the wider export and import process. The IEC is the first registration in a chain. When you import goods, your customs broker files a bill of entry that carries your IEC, customs assesses and collects duty, and your bank remits payment to the overseas supplier while reporting the transaction against your IEC. When you export goods, the shipping bill carries your IEC, the goods are cleared and shipped, and the export proceeds received by your bank are matched against the shipping bill. Export incentives and duty drawback are also credited to the bank account linked with your IEC. Because so many systems rely on the IEC, an error in your IEC details can cause problems at every step, from customs clearance to bank reporting. This is why we spend time checking your details before filing.
Planning your first shipment. Many first-time exporters and importers are surprised by how many parties are involved: the overseas buyer or supplier, the freight forwarder, the customs broker, the shipping line or airline, the bank, and sometimes inspection or certification agencies. An IEC alone does not make you ready to ship. You also need to understand your product's tariff classification, whether it is freely importable or exportable or restricted, the documents your buyer's country requires, and the payment terms that protect you. During our briefing, we explain these points at a practical level, so you know what to expect when your first order comes in.
Eligibility and Legal Requirements
- PAN. The applicant must have a valid PAN. The IEC is issued against the PAN of the business: the individual's PAN for a proprietorship, or the entity's PAN for a firm, LLP or company.
- One IEC per PAN. Only one IEC can be issued against a PAN. Branches are added to the same IEC.
- Business address. The applicant must have a registered or principal place of business in India.
- Bank account. A current account in the name of the business, which will be linked to the IEC for foreign trade transactions.
- Valid contact details. A working mobile number and email address for OTP verification and communications.
- Digital signature or Aadhaar-based verification. The application is signed using a digital signature certificate or electronic verification, depending on the applicant type.
- Annual update. Every IEC holder must update or confirm IEC details online every year within the period specified by the Directorate. An IEC that is not updated is deactivated and can be reactivated only after the update.
The trade policy and procedures are revised from time to time, and we follow the current requirements at the time of filing.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Consultation. We understand your business, the goods or services you plan to import or export, and whether you need any other registrations alongside the IEC, such as GST registration or registration with an export promotion council.
- Document collection. We collect your PAN, address proof, bank details and constitution documents, and check that the name and address match across them.
- Registration on the trade portal. We create the applicant's user account on the Directorate's online system using the registered mobile and email.
- Preparing the application. We fill in the applicant details, type of entity, PAN, address, branch details if any, bank details, and details of the proprietor, partners or directors.
- Uploading documents. We upload the address proof of the business premises and the bank document, such as a cancelled cheque or bank certificate.
- Signing. The application is signed digitally or verified through electronic verification.
- Fee payment. The government fee is paid online at actual.
- Issue of IEC. In most cases, the IEC is generated electronically soon after successful submission and verification. The e-IEC certificate is available for download.
- Linking with customs systems. We guide you on registering with the customs systems and linking the bank account details required for receiving export incentives.
- Handover and briefing. We share your e-IEC certificate and explain the annual update requirement and other steps for your first shipment.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Mismatched details. The name and address on your IEC must match your PAN and GST records. Mismatches can cause problems at customs and with banks.
- Waiting until the shipment is ready. Apply for your IEC as soon as you plan to trade internationally. Goods that arrive before your IEC and customs registrations are in place can attract storage and demurrage charges while they wait at the port.
- Forgetting the annual update. IEC holders must update their details every year within the specified window. Missing it leads to deactivation, which can hold up shipments.
- Applying for a second IEC. Only one IEC is allowed per PAN. Additional branches should be added to the existing IEC.
- Using a personal savings account. The bank account linked to the IEC should be a current account in the business name.
- Not updating changes. Changes in address, partners, directors or bank account must be updated in the IEC.
- Assuming the IEC is enough. Depending on your products, you may also need other licences or registrations, such as food safety licences, product certifications or restricted item authorisations.
What Happens After
- Register with customs systems and link your IEC with your customs broker.
- Register your bank account with customs where needed for receiving export incentives and duty drawback.
- Obtain GST registration if not already registered, since most importers and exporters are required to register under GST.
- Register with the relevant export promotion council if you want to claim certain benefits.
- Check product-specific requirements. Some goods are restricted or need additional licences or certifications for import or export.
- Update your IEC every year within the specified window, even if there are no changes.
- Maintain records of imports, exports, foreign exchange receipts and payments, and documents such as invoices, bills of entry, shipping bills and bank certificates.
- Comply with foreign exchange rules on timelines for realising export proceeds and paying for imports.
FAQs
Is IEC mandatory for every import and export?
An IEC is required for import and export of goods for business purposes, except for specifically exempted categories. Individuals importing or exporting goods for personal use are generally exempt.
Does the IEC expire?
No. An IEC is valid for life. However, it must be updated online every year within the specified window, otherwise it is deactivated.
Is IEC needed for exporting services?
IEC is not mandatory for exporting services in every case, but it is needed if you want to claim benefits under the trade policy, and many banks ask for it when receiving export proceeds.
Can I have more than one IEC?
No. Only one IEC is issued per PAN. If your business has multiple branches, they are added to the same IEC.
Do I need GST registration to get an IEC?
GST registration is not a precondition for issuing an IEC, but most businesses that import or export goods are required to register under GST, and GST details are linked with customs.
Can an individual apply for an IEC?
Yes. An individual can apply for an IEC using their PAN if they import or export for business purposes.
What happens if my IEC is deactivated?
You cannot use a deactivated IEC for customs clearance. You need to complete the online update to reactivate it. We can help with reactivation.
Can I change the details in my IEC later?
Yes. You can modify details such as address, bank account, partners or directors through an online modification application.
Is the IEC number the same as my PAN?
For applications made under the current system, the IEC number is generally the same as the PAN of the applicant. Older IECs issued before this practice may have a different number, which remains valid.
Can a new business with no turnover apply for an IEC?
Yes. There is no minimum turnover or business history required. A newly registered business can apply for an IEC as soon as it has a PAN, a business address and a current account.
Does an IEC allow me to import any product?
No. The IEC is an identification number, not a licence for specific goods. Some goods are prohibited, some are restricted and need a separate authorisation, and some need product certifications or registrations from other regulators. We can check the import or export policy for your products before you place an order.
What is the annual IEC update?
Every IEC holder must log in and confirm or update their IEC details once a year during the update window set by the Directorate. If no changes are needed, the details are simply confirmed. Missing the update leads to deactivation of the IEC until the update is completed.
Do I need an IEC to sell overseas through online marketplaces?
If you export goods to overseas customers, whether directly or through an online channel, you generally need an IEC, subject to the special rules for low-value courier shipments.
