GST Registration
Get your GSTIN in 3–7 days — fully handled end-to-end
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services. GST Registration gives your business a legal identity, allows you to collect tax from customers, claim input tax credit, and participate in formal trade channels. It is compulsory above the prescribed turnover threshold.
GST Registration: complete guide
Introduction
Goods and Services Tax, or GST, is the single indirect tax that applies to the supply of most goods and services across India. It replaced a long list of older central and state taxes, such as excise duty, service tax and VAT, with one system that is administered jointly by the Centre and the states. Any business that crosses the turnover limits set by law, or that falls into one of the categories where registration is compulsory, must register under GST and obtain a GST Identification Number, commonly called a GSTIN.
A GSTIN is a 15-character number that identifies your business for tax purposes. The first two digits are the state code, the next ten characters are the PAN of the business owner or entity, the thirteenth character shows how many registrations exist under the same PAN in that state, the fourteenth is the letter Z by default, and the last character is a check digit. Once you have a GSTIN, you can collect GST from your customers, claim input tax credit on the GST you pay to your suppliers, and file returns that keep your business compliant.
GST registration is done online through the GST portal. The process itself is not long, but it is detail-heavy. A small mismatch between your PAN, Aadhaar, address proof and bank records can lead to a query from the tax officer, a delay of several weeks or, in some cases, a rejected application that has to be filed again from the start. Our team prepares and files the application for you, checks every document before submission, and handles any clarification the department asks for until your registration certificate is issued.
This page explains who needs GST registration, what the law requires, the documents you will need, how the process works step by step, how long it usually takes, and what you must do after your GSTIN is issued.
Who Needs It
GST registration becomes necessary in two broad situations: when your turnover crosses the threshold limit, and when your type of business requires registration regardless of turnover.
Based on turnover. A business that supplies only goods must register once its aggregate annual turnover crosses 40 lakh rupees. A business that supplies services, or both goods and services, must register once its turnover crosses 20 lakh rupees. A few states, mainly in the North-East, have lower limits of 20 lakh rupees for goods and 10 lakh rupees for services, and some states have kept the goods limit at 20 lakh rupees, so we confirm the limit that applies in your state before filing. Aggregate turnover is calculated on an all-India basis for the same PAN, and it includes taxable, exempt and export supplies.
Compulsory registration, regardless of turnover. You must register even if your turnover is below the limit if you:
- Make inter-state taxable supplies of goods, that is, sell goods to a buyer in another state.
- Sell goods or services through an e-commerce operator, subject to the limited exemptions notified for small suppliers.
- Operate as an e-commerce operator yourself, or are required to collect tax at source.
- Are a casual taxable person who supplies goods or services in a state where you have no fixed place of business, such as at exhibitions or seasonal fairs.
- Are a non-resident taxable person making taxable supplies in India.
- Are liable to pay tax under the reverse charge mechanism.
- Are required to deduct tax at source under GST, such as certain government departments.
- Act as an agent who supplies goods or services on behalf of another registered person.
- Are an Input Service Distributor distributing credit across branches.
- Supply online information and database access services from outside India to unregistered recipients in India.
Voluntary registration. Many businesses below the limit choose to register anyway. This is common for startups that deal with larger corporate clients, since those clients usually prefer suppliers with a GSTIN so they can claim input tax credit. Voluntary registration also lets you claim credit on your own purchases and makes it easier to sell online and across states. Once you register voluntarily, you must follow all the same filing rules as any other registered business.
Common types of applicants include sole proprietors, partnership firms, limited liability partnerships, private and public limited companies, one person companies, trusts, societies, Hindu Undivided Families and government bodies.
Key Benefits
GST registration is a legal requirement for many businesses, but it also brings real commercial advantages.
- Legal recognition as a supplier. A GSTIN shows customers, banks and partners that your business is registered with the tax authorities, which builds trust.
- Input tax credit. You can claim credit for the GST paid on purchases, raw materials, rent, professional fees and other business inputs, and set it off against the GST you collect. This lowers your real cost of doing business.
- Access to larger clients. Registered buyers can only claim credit on purchases from registered sellers, so many companies work only with GST-registered vendors.
- Selling across states and online. Inter-state sales of goods and most online marketplace sales require registration, so a GSTIN opens up a much larger market.
- Easier access to finance. Banks and lenders often look at GST returns as a reliable record of business turnover when assessing a loan.
- Avoiding penalties. Carrying on business without registration when it is required can attract a penalty and the tax amount itself, along with interest.
- Composition scheme option. Eligible small businesses can opt for the composition scheme, which allows them to pay tax at a lower fixed rate on turnover and file simpler returns, with the trade-off that they cannot collect GST from customers or claim input tax credit.
Eligibility and Legal Requirements
GST registration is governed by the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, the matching state GST laws, the Integrated GST Act for inter-state supplies, and the rules and notifications issued under them. The key requirements are:
- A valid PAN. Registration is PAN-based. Every applicant, other than a non-resident taxable person and a few special categories, must have a PAN in the name of the business or its proprietor.
- A place of business in the state. Registration is state-specific. If you operate from more than one state, you need a separate registration in each state. You may also take separate registrations for different business verticals within one state.
- Aadhaar authentication. The proprietor, partners, directors or authorised signatory must complete Aadhaar authentication. In many states, applicants are now also required to complete biometric verification and photograph capture at a GST Suvidha Kendra after filing the application. If authentication is not completed, the department may carry out a physical verification of the premises before approving the registration.
- An authorised signatory. One person must be authorised to sign and verify the application and future returns. For a company or LLP, this is normally done through a board resolution or a letter of authorisation.
- A digital signature where required. Companies and LLPs must sign the application using a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate. Proprietors and partnerships can usually verify using an electronic verification code sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Bank account details. After registration, the bank account details must be updated on the portal within the time allowed by the rules, failing which the registration can be suspended.
- Time limit to apply. A business must apply within 30 days of becoming liable to register. Casual taxable persons and non-resident taxable persons must apply at least five days before they start business.
Rules and procedures under GST change from time to time through notifications and circulars. We check the current requirements at the time of filing so your application reflects the latest position.
Step-by-Step Guide
Here is how a GST registration application moves from start to finish when you work with our team.
- Initial consultation. We speak with you to understand your business: what you sell, where you operate, your expected turnover and whether you sell online or across states. This tells us whether you need a regular registration, a composition registration or a special category registration.
- Document collection. We share a checklist tailored to your type of business. You upload the documents securely, and our team reviews them for name mismatches, unclear scans, expired documents and address discrepancies.
- Choosing the right details. We help you finalise the principal place of business, any additional places of business, the nature of business activity, and the correct HSN codes for goods and SAC codes for services that you will supply.
- Part A of the application. We submit Part A on the GST portal using your PAN, mobile number and email address. One-time passwords are sent to your mobile and email to verify them, and a Temporary Reference Number is generated.
- Part B of the application. Using the Temporary Reference Number, we complete Part B with full details of the business, promoters, authorised signatory, places of business, goods and services, and bank details where available. All supporting documents are uploaded in the required format and size.
- Verification and Aadhaar authentication. The application is verified through a digital signature or electronic verification code. The promoters or authorised signatory then complete Aadhaar authentication, and where the state requires it, biometric verification at a GST Suvidha Kendra. We guide you on booking and attending the appointment.
- Application Reference Number. Once submitted, the portal issues an Application Reference Number. We use it to track the status of your application.
- Responding to queries. If the tax officer needs more information or a corrected document, a notice is issued in Form GST REG-03. We prepare and file the reply in Form GST REG-04 within the time allowed, so your application is not rejected for want of a response.
- Approval and certificate. Once the officer is satisfied, the registration is approved and the registration certificate in Form GST REG-06 is issued, along with your GSTIN. We share the certificate and your portal login details with you.
- Post-registration setup. We walk you through your first steps as a registered business, including invoice format, return due dates and bank account updation.

How Long It Takes
In most cases, GST registration is completed within 7 to 15 working days from the date we receive complete documents. The timeline depends on a few factors:
- Document preparation: usually one to two working days, depending on how quickly documents are shared and whether any corrections are needed.
- Filing the application: usually completed on the same day the documents are finalised.
- Aadhaar and biometric authentication: depends on appointment availability at the GST Suvidha Kendra in your state.
- Departmental processing: where authentication is completed successfully and the officer raises no query, the law provides for approval within seven working days. Where physical verification of the premises is needed, the department can take up to 30 days.
- Clarification requests: if a notice is issued, the clock pauses until the reply is filed. Our team files replies promptly to keep delays to a minimum.
We keep you updated at each stage, so you always know where your application stands.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Most delays and rejections come from a small set of avoidable errors. Watch out for these:
- Name mismatches. The name on the PAN, Aadhaar and bank account must match exactly. Even a missing middle name can trigger a query.
- Weak address proof. A rent agreement without a supporting electricity bill, or a consent letter without the owner's proof, is one of the most common reasons for a notice.
- Wrong business activity or codes. Choosing the wrong HSN or SAC code, or describing the business vaguely, can create problems later when you file returns.
- Choosing composition when you are not eligible. Businesses that make inter-state sales of goods or sell through e-commerce operators often cannot use the composition scheme.
- Missing the authentication step. Applications where Aadhaar or biometric authentication is not completed take longer and are more likely to face physical verification.
- Ignoring a clarification notice. If the reply is not filed within the time allowed, the application can be rejected and you will need to apply again.
- Applying too late. Not applying within 30 days of becoming liable can lead to penalties and interest on the tax that should have been collected.
- Unclear scanned documents. Blurred, cropped or oversized files are a frequent cause of rejection. We check every upload before filing.
What Happens After
Getting your GSTIN is the start of your GST compliance, not the end. Once registered, you will need to:
- Update your bank account details on the portal within the time required by the rules.
- Display your GSTIN on the signboard at your place of business and keep the registration certificate displayed prominently.
- Issue GST-compliant invoices that show your GSTIN, the buyer's GSTIN where applicable, HSN or SAC codes, tax rates and the tax amount.
- File returns on time. Most regular taxpayers file a monthly or quarterly statement of outward supplies and a summary return with tax payment. Composition taxpayers file a quarterly statement and an annual return. Late filing attracts late fees and interest.
- Maintain books of account and records of purchases, sales, stock and input tax credit at your principal place of business.
- Report changes. Any change in address, partners, directors, business activity or contact details must be updated through an amendment application within the time limits set by law.
- Cancel or surrender properly. If you close the business, or your registration is no longer needed, apply for cancellation and file the final return so you are not charged late fees for returns you no longer need to file.
Our team can also take care of monthly GST return filing, GST advisory and responses to notices, so your compliance stays on track after registration.
FAQs
Is GST registration mandatory for every business?
No. It is mandatory only when your turnover crosses the applicable threshold, or when your business falls into a category where registration is compulsory, such as inter-state supply of goods, selling through e-commerce operators, or paying tax under reverse charge. Other businesses can register voluntarily.
Can I get GST registration without a commercial office?
Yes. You can register using a residential address as your place of business, provided you have valid proof of address. If the property is not in your name, you will need a consent letter from the owner along with their proof of ownership.
Do I need a separate GST registration for each state?
Yes. GST registration is state-specific. If you have a place of business in more than one state, you need a separate GSTIN in each of those states. You can also take separate registrations for different business verticals within the same state.
How long is a GST registration valid?
A regular GST registration does not expire as long as you keep filing returns and the business continues. Registrations taken by casual taxable persons and non-resident taxable persons are valid for a limited period, which can be extended on application.
What is the composition scheme, and should I choose it?
The composition scheme lets eligible small businesses pay tax at a lower fixed rate on turnover and file fewer returns. However, composition taxpayers cannot charge GST on their invoices, cannot claim input tax credit and generally cannot make inter-state sales of goods. We help you weigh these trade-offs before you decide.
What happens if my application gets a clarification notice?
The officer issues a notice explaining what is missing or needs correction. We prepare the reply and upload any additional documents within the time allowed. Once the officer is satisfied, the registration is approved.
Can a foreign company or non-resident register under GST?
Yes. A non-resident taxable person can register under GST, but the process and documents differ, and an authorised representative in India is usually required. Please speak with our team so we can explain the process for your case.
Can I cancel my GST registration later?
Yes. If your business closes, is transferred, or your turnover falls below the threshold and you were not otherwise required to register, you can apply for cancellation. You will need to file a final return after cancellation.
What do I need to do right after receiving my GSTIN?
Update your bank details on the portal, display your GSTIN and certificate at your business premises, start issuing GST-compliant invoices and note your return due dates. We cover all of this in a short call once your registration is approved.
